Schola Cantorum of Texas Explores “The Ecstasies Above” in 2009-2010 Season 9/29/2009

Fort Worth, Tex., Sept. 29, 2008 – For most choirs, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana would likely be the culmination of a season-long effort, not a warm-up. But Schola Cantorum of Texas isn’t like most choirs.

Following an exceptionally well received and critically acclaimed performance of Carmina Burana at the Meyerson Symphony Center with the Dallas Wind Symphony Sept. 14 and 15, the distinguished choral group opens its 47th regular season Sunday, October 25 at Arborlawn United Methodist Church in Forth Worth.

Season Opening Concert – “There’s a Meetin’ Here Tonight”

  • Sunday, Oct. 25 – 3:00 p.m. – Arborlawn UMC, Fort Worth
  • Sunday, Nov. 1 – 6 p.m. – Granbury First UMC, Granbury, Texas

The season’s theme, “The Ecstasies Above” will be expressed first with a rousing performance of traditional hymns and spirituals titled “There’s a Meetin’ Here Tonight” in a 3:00 p.m. performance at Arborlawn UMC, 5001 Briarhaven Rd., Fort Worth.

This rousing concert of powerful music will include many favorite spirituals, hymns, and Gospel songs featuring works arranged by Moses Hogan, James Miller, Alice Parker, Roy Ringwald, and others.

Season Tickets Available Now

This season Schola brings back its popular $38 season ticket, which ensures preferred seating at a discounted price. Single tickets are available for $20. Christmas Concerts – “Here We Come A-Carolin’”

  • Sunday, Dec. 13 – 7:30 p.m. – Trinity UMC, 3321 West Park Row Drive, Arlington
  • Monday, Dec. 14 – 7:30 p.m. – St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, 2700 McPherson Ave., Fort Worth
  • Tuesday, Dec. 15 – 7:30 p.m. – White’s Chapel UMC, 185 S. White’s Chapel Blvd., Southlake

Schola also will continue its popular A Gift of Music at Christmas concerts, presented free of charge. This series, one Tarrant County’s most popular seasonal celebrations, draws thousands each year to hear arrangements of carols old and new and to join in the carol sing-along.

Schola explores some of history’s most elegant and scintillating music for strings, piano and choir, including Brahms’ Neue Liebeslieder Waltzer, Beethoven’ Elegiac Song, Renee Clausen’s My Luv Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Tarik O’Regan’s The Ecstasies Above, and , and Eric Whitacre’s Hebrew love Songs.

Dr. Jerry McCoy is the fourth music director in the 47-year history of Schola Cantorum of Texas. He is Director of Choral Studies and Professor of Music at the University of North Texas, where he conducts the renowned A Capella Choir, North Texas Chamber Choir and the Grand Chorus. Dr. McCoy teaches choral studies and advanced choral techniques and guides an acclaimed choral program that includes more than 300 students.

Alan Buratto is piano accompanist for Schola Cantorum. He holds degrees in piano performance from Washington State University and New England Conservatory, has done doctoral work in choral conducting at the University of North Texas and served as Artistic Director for the Texas Boys Choir.
